slip trailing workshop
slip trailing workshop
july 27th & 28th 10am - 4pm
in this two day workshop, students will learn delicate sculpting methods through unique slip-trailing techniques. you can create striking three dimensional sculptures on clay armatures as well as delicate stand-alone pieces through layering slip. this method of slip-trailing is great for achieving high levels of detail at a small scale. it is also great for making multiples of a form or design that would be too delicate to render in more traditional sculpting methods.
things we’ll cover in this workshop:
how to think in 2 dimensional layers to create three dimensional objects
icing bags and cake decorating tips vs. traditional slip applicators
using plaster bats and slump molds to make stand alone slip-trailed sculptures
strategies for rendering your designs with tracing paper and reference photos or drawings
how different slip consistency effects the aesthetics of the work
changing slip consistency with flocculent and de-flocculent
calculating specific gravity and adding colorants to your slip
slip dipping and burnout firing in conjunction with slip-trailing
& any other questions that come up!
